Northern Beaches Hospital Connectivity & Network Enhancement Project

The project involved upgrading the roads around the new Northern Beaches Hospital and improve the capacity along Warringah Road. The hospital is located close to Warringah Road, Forest Way and Wakehurst Parkway, which are major arterial roads serving Sydney’s northern suburbs. Together these arterials carry about 140,000 vehicles per day.

On completion, the upgrade will provide a better travel experience and increase traffic capacity around the hospital precinct as well as on the major arterial roads in the area to cater for the anticipated population growth and traffic volumes following the opening of the hospital. This will result in more reliable journey times, improved flow for through traffic and safer access to cyclists and pedestrians.

The project was made up of 2 stages

Stage 1 - Hospital Connectivity

Stage 1 was about providing key connectivity and traffic capacity around the new hospital by upgrading Frenchs Forest Road East, West Naree Road from a single to dual carriageway, improving pedestrian access as well as bus stop upgrades servicing the hospital. Stage 1 was completed and opened to traffic in October 2018.

Stage 2 – Network Enhancement

Stage 2 included upgrading Warringah Road to improve the performance of the road network to reduce congestion around the hospital, and the construction of a 1.3-kilometre-long underpass and three underpass bridges at the Forest Way, Hilmer Street and Wakehurst Parkway intersections. It also includes key intersection improvements, bus stop upgrades, new shared paths and new pedestrian bridges. Stage 2 was completed and opened to traffic in March 2020.

IDC Contracting initially entered into a contract with the head contractor Ferrovial York Joint Venture (FYJV) for the installation of stormwater drainage Infrastructure associated with Stage 1. IDC Contracting was later awarded further Stormwater Drainage and Civil scoped packages in Stage 2. These works were performed over a 3-year period
